A Fresh Look

The negative side to blogging

by Morgan | October 17, 2007

To start off, I back my fellow school bloggers 100%. Apparently the Editor in Chief of the Ipulse got their feelings hurt and decided to attack the blogs and bloggers who write them. Since this person decided to attack us, I feel I should say something.

We are a small few who write about different topics about Lynn. If one of us has some sort of idea, maybe a small portion of the school feels the same way? If the Editor in Chief has read my blog over the past few weeks, they would see that I write about what others comment on that can be changed at Lynn.

Newspapers around the world get attacked every day. As a writer, I would have thought that an editor would have loved some advice about how to improve on the paper that they take so much pride in. In English 101, criticism is supposed to be welcomed to improve on one’s work. Yes, it may hurt, but the person giving the advice is just helping the writer see where things could be improved. They only want to see the work perform to its fullest potential. I would like to drill home the idea that in ENGLISH 101, students are asked to see criticism as helpful insight to improve on their work, not an attack as inexperienced writers may see it at first. Maybe as Editor in Chief, you might want to see that even a fellow blogger of mine and a student at Lynn, who works on the Ipulse was thankful for the comments, for she took it as a chance to improve on something that she takes pride in.

In every career, no matter if you are the best, you can always learn from others. Being close minded will not allow growth in any field. Ignoring concerns of your readers will not help the Ipulse in the long run.

And last I checked, this is America, where we have freedom of speech. Feel free to voice your thoughts, and we will feel free to do the same. Speaking of voice, in writing, voice is extremely important, and for someone who took the weekend to gather their words, it seems maybe you should have taken another one, for it still seemed to be a person venting. I am also repulsed by the idea that the Editor would show such lack of couth when speaking to a student/blogger/ and fellow writer. I do believe apologies are needed all around.

And for insulting me, thank you for twisting my words. Because of this lack of respect to even properly respond to what I said, I now vow to never pick up another Ipulse for as long as I attend Lynn University. I stated that the Ipulse was hard to read for I did not feel that the articles in it were to our schools standards. As the Editor, if you are finding it hard to have your students even show up to class, I must ask, have you tried motivation?

I simply asked if more important articles could make it into the news letter, rather than what seems to be the same themes that pop up every week. How about one week dedicated to each presidential nominees? This will allow plenty of time for articles to be explored and expanded. College students tend to be on the broke side, advertise which places are having sales? Good places to eat maybe? Jena six? There were just student Government Elections, what do the class reps want to make happen over the school year? Hidden gems of Boca Raton? I’m new to the area, I would love to learn about the different places students hang out. How many organizations are there on campus? Interview the presidents/ leaders. Ask students how they deal with stress or manage their time! Interview the people who RUN Lynn University! How about Dr. Kevin Ross? How many students know that he’s actually a really funny guy who only has the best attentions to see Lynn grow and thrive as a small university?

I am not going to apologize for my words until the Ipulse Editor reminds themself that words do hurt and they owe a friend of mine a very large apology. Just because someone offers advice does not mean it must be taken. As Lynn is growing, it is improving. Students are a large part of reasons behind the improvements. It is to make Lynn a better university. As a fellow writer, someone was trying to help the Ipulse grow like the school. She made valid points that I think should at least be acknowledged. Now, I don’t mean every point but I do mean a few were good points. There was nothing nice in the Editors comments to her. This is partly why I am so upset about this, plus they attacked me as well.

I know egos were bruised all around, so I do think that maybe a long talk is in order, but I still refuse to pick up the Ipulse as long as I attend Lynn University.
