The new graduate 10?
Everyone seems to talk about the Freshmen 15. Parents warn you, the school nurse warns you, books warn you, and yet most students gain it. I personally lost weight when I first got to college and then gained it back so I ended up right back where I started. But that is not the focus of this post today!
Why is it that no one seems to talk about the weight students gain after graduation? Not to call anyone out but it seems that a lot of the graduates I hang out with that I knew all 4 years in my undergraduate are just a little more… plump. It seems that the majority of us have gained weight. You would think with no free access to food all the time in the caf we would lose weight but that hardly seems to be the case. No one seemed to warn us about the dangers of graduating to our waist lines. Sure we are told to get jobs, start paying back our loans, save money for our futures, but no one said to watch our weight. Although to be honest, I don’t think that piece of advice would go over very well with half the graduating population.
I will say though that a few have come out of college looking better than ever! Congrats to them because I am not one of them. lol.
I think the reason behind the weight gain may be that we have low paying jobs if we even do have a job and so keeping fresh fruits and vegetables in the apartment is not an easy task. I know in my apartment its all about getting stuff that can last a long time expiration wise. I feel like I’ve become a hoarder in a sense. I don’t want to run out of food if things get rough plus with the crazy weather in Florida, I would hate for a hurricane to hit and not have anything for days. Plus, I have two cats and its one thing for me to not have food if there was a natural disaster, but how do you explain that to them?
I haven’t done one of these things in a while, but here we go, freshmen 101 tip, you may gain some weight on your way in and out of college. You have way more support when you get to college than you do when get out of college about making sure you are eating healthy meals. Parents of the graduating class of 2012 looking for gift ideas? How about a gym membership paid for for the first 3 months, or a shopping trip to the local market. You may be surprised that the only thing in your new grad’s frig is soda, pizza, ice cream, rice, pasta sauce, and a ton of mac and cheese in a box. If your grads kitchen is full of actual food while you are there, it may be all for show. Ask them in a month what they need from the store and you may be surprised they suddenly are out of everything.
