Archives: Lynn Events
Founders Day!
Yestorday was Lynn University’s Founders Day. Once again, I ate myself sick. Three years in a row, I found all the good tents and stations and threw caution to the wind. The last two years, I had to work so I really couldn’t fully enjoy all the events of Founders Day, but this year, I was free all evening to eat great food, chill with friends, enjoy the band, and well, eat more food. lol. I can’t remember the name of the company, but they created mini doughnuts infront of you, deep fried oreo’s and mini waffles. It was pretty cool, and the line showed it. Little face prints could be seen at toddler hight on the glass. I ate so much kettle corn, and I finally got a founders day shirt! I don’t have a shirt from the last two years, but I made sure to get one this year!
I’m looking forward to next years, mostly because Michelle will be home from her study abroad and we can take crazy pictures again in the photobooth! I would share, but she is holding the photos hostage until she returns!
President Ross and the New Blog Squad
Today had a very unusual lunch. I had lunch with President Ross of Lynn University along with all the bloggers. It was our first chance as bloggers to all sit down together to meet each other in our new roles. It is fun to see who I will be working side by side with online for the school year. I knew some already on a personal note.
It was a little strange to meet everyone while meeting the president of our university. No pressure or anything! I have heard President Ross speak many times over the last two years at school and he is a wonderful speaker. I personally think that his age and dreams for Lynn work for him. Who cares if the other universities have guys in their 70’s, when they were in college, our parents weren’t even alive, so what do they know about today’s generation? He told us about his college years while asking us about how ours were going, even if it was only really day 5 for one of us, Kerri. President Ross has a great gift to walk into a room and make everyone feel comfortable. I found out just a few days ago, he risked embrassment and put on his dancing shoes for a good cause, scholarships for college students. Aparently, he’s willing to do things out of his norm infront of 500 people or get twitter (after Jason, our boss creates it for him and teaches him how to use it.) for his students. I wonder what he will be twittering about? Hmm, I guess that might mean I would have to create a twitter acount myself.
When I first got the email that the president wanted to have lunch with the bloggers, I laughed at the email, not believing it. I read it over again and thought about it. A man that is so busy, a student has to request a meeting weeks in advance is openly asking the bloggers to lunch? Plus, he was a huge fan of bloggers? I was shocked, then I was nervous, what was I going to wear!? lol. I just couldn’t believe he wanted to meet with the bloggers.
I was on my way to his office when he was heading towards me with other students, which one kept saying “Christines” over and over again, which to me ment the coffee shop, not thinking about the Christines meeting room, so I was wondering why I needed to follow Dr. Ross as he got coffee when we were supposed to be meeting upstairs in his conference room. (Later, I found the text message that was supposed to inform me of that, my phone was already on silent by this point.)
The food was great, but it seemed hardly any of us touched it from trying to keep up with the conversation. I know that was my reason, that and I didn’t want to drop food on myself from not fully paying attention since I saw Jason was fully prepared with his camera in the back of the room.
After tons of questions about our lives, where we were all from, what we wanted from Lynn, what he wanted from Lynn, I could finally see why this man is paid the big bucks. He really wants the best for Lynn University. I think if he had more time, he would spend more time just sitting around, listening to students and personally letting us in on his vision for Lynn. Just listening to him talk about everything that is planned for this school year explained a lot of why half the school looks like its being dug up. The tennis courts are being moved as well as the outside basketball courts. New lights are being put in. There are just so many small to large projects happening across the campus.
At the end of the day, I am excited that we have such a cool university president. Dr. Kevin Ross just wants to be open to change, ideas, and standing out from other universities. He has only been at this for 4 years at Lynn, which I was shocked to learn. Aparently I was informed this my freshmen year, but honestly, my thoughts weren’t on how long the president had been at the university or his plans, more like, so where is this class again and how much is the textbook??? By the way President Ross, if you are reading this, is there anything you could do about those biology book prices? I’ve also heard the business degree books are up there as well…. just a thought.
The formal lunch may have ended at 12:20, but that didn’t stop the bloggers from talking at mad speed for another hour. No one seemed to hold back their questions for each other, most being new at the school blogging gig. I got to meet Natalie, the soccer player, plus new blogger. I was really excited to meet her since I love soccer and love watching the games. Last year when we were talking about adding more bloggers, one being an athlete, I was praying it was a sport that I liked so I would actually read it. Aftering meeting Natalie, and walking over to the gym with her in the heavy rain, I am every excited to read her blog! She is really cool, fun, and an awsome soccer player. I met Kerri the newest to Lynn and the new youngest on the blog squad. Yes! Its not me anymore! No more teasing… at least about that. Gene will find something by the next meeting. ( I dont’ mind, just happy he’s healthy! Read his blog about his scary summer health issue.) Then there was JD, who has been talking about blogging for a while, now he’s up and online! Writing in spanish, so I have no clue what he’s saying. lol. I got to sit next to my sister Steph, who is now a blogger, here, there, everywhere! She is busy promoting disablity awareness month next month that she has created at Lynn. (She started planning it her freshmen year! She thinks big.) I talked to the two Ryan’s and Kevin for a few minutes before they ran to class due to the rain.
I am looking forward to working side by side with the new blog squad as well as reading what they have to say. Check us all out at http://blogs.lynn.edu/.
The First 24
I have been back in Florida for a little more than 24 hours now and I’m so excited but extremely tired! I could hardly sleep last night after I landed and arrived at the Marriott. My car was waiting for me in the parking lot with a loving note that she was taken cared of over the summer. I rushed to drop off my stuff in my room and came up with a lame excuse to drive my own car. lol. Yes, I’m weird. I drove to store and to my storage unit just for the fun of it. Man, when I opened my storage unit, I didn’t remember it that way! It some how had gotten a heck of a lot neater in my head over the months.
At about 8:45 am, I arrived at Lynn, already checked out of my hotel room, ready to check into school. I had checked in online the first day the school loaded it on mylynn, and so all I had to do was pick up my new parking decal. With the old ones removed from the previous two years, I happy slapped on the new one and was ready to check out my new room.
I opened the door to the new wing in Freiburger that has been changed to singles and noticed the new paint job. Signs and colors were splashed everywhere by my RA and classmate Wideline. (An awsome combo by the way, my RA and my classmate, we can study when she’s on duty and bored out of her mind…. or watch TV…) My room used to be a twin in an all guys wing. Now its a single on the girls floor, which in this case, happens to be the bottom floor. I’m not so sure how I feel about that at the moment, I’m just counting my blessings that I didn’t have to carry anything up the stairs!
I’m all moved in in one day! Thats never happened before! I’m in shock. haha. My boyfriends mom helped me move in since he couldn’t get time off of work. She laughed at our three day plan, slowly moving the stuff in. Within three hours, all my stuff was out of the storage unit, I had closed my account there and was heading back to school with the last half of my stuff, while his mom went home to relax, still laughing at our three day plan. Mothers have mad skills at packing and moving! After dinner at their house, the no longer working muscle came over and helped take the really heavy stuff into the room. I love this system. It took only a third of the time and half the energy. I have already put a lot away, my bed is set up, along with my laptop. Containers are in their places, and my sink looks like I’ve been here for days already. The only down side to the extreme move in, sun burn and a very sore body.
I love my room. I think I called my mom 5 times today to just tell her how much I love my room and how greatful I am to have it. I have so many ideas for my new room, my mind can’t keep up. So much to do to make it a place where I can really focus and relax when I need to during the rough weeks to come.
After two years under my belt, I feel like I’m finally getting the hang of this college life.
Now, I am going to force myself to go to sleep so that I don’t over to it today and try and unpack my room in one night. I just feel like I am on a roll and its hard to get off! There is always tomorrow between meetings… ah! Another meeting and it will only be day two!
Too excited to sleep
It is almost 1 am and I am to excited to sleep. I am looking forward to school to start in a few days. Yes, I’m the nerdy kid who loves the first day of school. I am using the Tri Sigma mentality, always moving forward. I’m looking forward, and enjoying what is yet to come. I am looking forward to moving into my dorm room! Finally, a single! All to myself, from the start. I have so many ideas for the room design, my mother is scared and has recently and oh so convenitly “lost” her wallet.
Black Student Union is going to be up and running this school year, ya! New exciting programs to come up with and new people to meet. Sigma Sigma Sigma recruitment, making new friends, loving new sisters. I am looking forward to continue with the ideas that I started last year and to see how they have grown over the summer to make them even better for the sorority. This year, I really want to take the time and get to know all the great women I call my sisters. I feel like I missed out on getting to know some of the ones that graduated last year and now they are gone becoming wonderful women in their fields.
Then there are the new labs, new ways to try and blow up our lab experiments.
Just joking Professor Ahmed!
This is the year where I have to find a job in my future field. I am going to the career center soon as I get back so they can help me make sure that I get the right job that meets the requirments that I need to get into a veterinarian school.
It is going to be a very busy year this year, but I am very excited to jump into it and get started! I have a feeling I may have over booked myself, but I’m not worried. I am looking forward to seeing what I learn about myself this year and the great adventures I find myself in over time. I feel like junior year is my year to shine. Freshmen year was the year to adapt to my new life, sophomore year was the year to work hard and focus on my grades and what made me happy, now it’s my year to come out of my shell and make my mark.
Saying Good Bye
A lot of my friends and sisters are graduating this weekend. Its sad to say good bye to everyone.
A long list of my sisters will be handed their diploma, 4 years of hard work and 4 years of being great sisters. It’s sad to see them go, but its great to see them moving on with their lives.
It is also scary for me. How have two years flown by? That means I only have two years left!
At the moment, I am enjoying a mini vacation at the Marriott near Lynn, soon as I get back summer classes! It will be Zoology and Animal Science!
Gongrats class of 2009! *sniff sniff* Come back to visit us at Lynn for Alumni Weekend!
Exams and Summer Plans
The end of this week starts Exam week. I have an exam on Thursday for Human Anatomy. So not exciting. *sigh* exams are a very stressful time of year at in the spring because for freshmen and sophomores, it means moving out of the dorms. Seniors are nervous and excited about graduation just being days away and having family flying in from all over the planet. Sophomores and juniors are fighting with the housing board to let them move off campus. Oh what a wonderful but very busy time of year!
I am still planning on what I am doing for summer vacation. It keeps changing due to new information coming in each day which only complicates things. Originally, I was suppose to go to Brazil to see Michelle for a week, then come back and spend time at home, get a summer job, and chill with the cats until my mother returned home from Iraq. Now its looking more like summer courses. I need 3 courses to get into vet school that Lynn does not offer.
Something that I have learned since I have been in college is that no one just tells you what to do anymore when it comes to your education. It’s YOUR education. I meet or email my adviser a few times a semester to make sure that I am on track. I just had an hour long meeting about my future and that is when I realized that I needed to take these summer courses this summer not next summer. Thus, the change in plans. I also need 400 hours of clinical work, but I am not worried, for there is the Career Center on campus that can help me. I have realized this year that I must be pro active in my college career. If I want to take a course, I have to speak up when I’m planning my schedule with my adviser, they aren’t mind readers.
The power of email. It is so important now and days when talking to professors. Recently, one of my professors forgot to print out my handouts for my final project. She was going to print them out in color for students that asked ahead of time. I had asked her a week in advance in person, as well as emailed her back and forth. She forgot the day of my presentation, but because there were emails for proof that I had asked for them, my grade was not affected.
Well, I must go back to looking for summer courses. I have to find the courses online because I could not find any of the courses that I need in DC, apparently they don’t like animals or vets there and my mother insists that I come home this summer, that I’m never home and don’t spend time with her. Funny, cause here I was thinking she was never home due to being in a war zone.
Gym Class Heroes
So this is way past over due. Just been busy planning what I want to do this summer, which changes every single day. Ugh! Anyway, back to the concert.
Seeing Gym Class Heroes live was really exciting and a lot of fun. I even got Michelle to come to the concert and she only listens to rock music. She came for a while until she remembered how much homework we had to do, on and that test we had first thing the next morning, but that didn’t stop me! I staid till the very end to only be covered in the leader singer, Travis McCoy’s sweat and attacked by screaming girls. I got some great pictures, now just to load them so I can post them on here! I got some great one’s of the whole band.
Stay tuned, there will be photos of one crazy night on Lynn’s campus! I love Spring Concerts!
A Chocolate break
Today in class, as I fell asleep about 6 times in the very warm room, I was awaken to find out we were switching rooms. No big deal, I was thankful for the fresh air and the cold lab that was sure to keep me awake.
While walking back to the lab, Michelle sniffs the air and then informs me that there is a chocolate fountain in the area. lol. So now we are both sniffing the air for the smell of chocolate.
Once in the lab, I notice that about half the class is missing. It wasn’t a hard guess where they were when they slowly started showing up back in class… with plates of fruit dipped in chocolate.
Michelle, Wideline, and I start chattering in our corner about the random event. A student walks back into the room, which Wideline was more than happy to infrom that they were being crazy for walking out of class for chocolate, but her argument did not last long. The moment she saw a chocolate cupcake, the rest of her comment was long gone from her thoughts. Michelle of course turned towards me, looking very serious, to only inform me that I was to “stay behind and take notes.”
So off the two of them went to explore the magical area in ASSAF where the chocolate fountain was located. Still in shock at the madness, I take a look around the room to see more than half the class eating who knows what, and about 2 students actually listening to profesor Ahmed. He suddenly realizes that something is very wrong and looks around to find his students in what to him must have looked like a huge mess of 6 year olds. There was liquid form chocolate all over the lab. And just what did our professor have to say? “Hey, were did you guys get that?”
Not long after his sudden realization that his students weren’t listening, was Professor Ahmed getting his own plate, thus ending the class.
Wideline brought me back a cupcake and we all packed up our stuff. As I passed the booth with all the goodies lined up nicely, I found the source of all the distraction, the library! Now, I thought they were supposed to help us learn! Oh well, I got to hand it to the library staff, they sure do know how to get the students attention!
I must say though, Professor Ahmed had the last laugh at the end of the day. We are still bio majors, and so all he had to do was pour some strange liquid into a bowl with some purple powder which caught fire and filled the lab full of smoke for 15 minutes to get our attention back. I’ve got to hand it to the man, he knows how to keep his students!
Enjoying life
Lately I have been enjoying myself at Lynn. Today I went to the school’s coffee shop, Christines, with Cristina. I am def noticing the change in work load since freshmen year. Now back for my second semester as a sophomore, I am feeling the pressure to do more in shorter amounts of time and well, it gets rough some times.
But like I said, I am enjoying my time at Lynn and enjoying life. Tri Sigma had a Super Bowl theme meeting the other night. I don’t remember ever having a theme for a meeting before, but we sure did enjoy it, pizza and all.
Now that I have a good few months under my belt, I am starting to think about study abroad. Junior year will be here faster than I ever expected, I know that much, so I am trying to plan ahead. My only problem is I can’t figure out what I am going to do! I am going to stop by the study abroad office some time this week or next to figure out what Lynn offers.
Oh! And my room is all set up now! It looks wonderful and feels like a place I can relax in now, not like a cell anymore. I had some help getting my new room set up, and the bribes were worth it! I love how everything is set up.
Oh and another thing! Did anyone check out the last home game for basketball? We had 99 points, one point away from an even 100. My friends and I were going nuts over the one point. We wanted to see it go into the hundreds but oh well, we won! It was a great game as always. I love sporting events at school, Lynn students and staff go wild at all the games. No matter if we are winning or losing, there are people screaming, chanting, laughing, dancing, its just crazy!
Well, homework calls. Like I said, sophomore year is just a little more demanding than my freshmen year…. man, if only I knew how easy I had it!
Internet down
The whole campus did not have internet all day yesterday. Talk about WWIII about to start! Security had to come to the library due to people being upset.
“42 to base, all down, all down.” *cracks up* security is funny.
Students were freaking out, having panic attacks, losing information, and who knows what else. Bills were not getting paid, 9 page assignments were getting lost, and at some point, people couldn’t even log onto a computer in the library. Some people couldn’t save to the H drive for a while which caused a few people to almost stop breathing.
Finally we got the internet back some time in the middle of the night. No one seems to know what happened but at least its back and people can get back to doing their homework!
Note to IT, lets never have that happen again! Last night was scary!
