More Spiders

November 1st, 2008 at 12:56 pm by Jana

So I have baby spiders crawling around….in my car. And considering I killed a black widow in my trunk about a month and a half ago, I have a sneaking suspicion that they may be little baby black widow spiders. … … … … Help.

I was driving back from CVS on Thursday and as I was gathering up all of my bags, I saw 3 or 4 of them on my gear stick. I’m very proud of the fact that I stayed calm–no shrieking to speak of. I am, however, quite terrified of being near my car knowing they are there.

I called an Orkin guy today to see what to do to get rid of them. He said regular old bug spray would be fine. My car is going to be emitting a not so lovely fragrance for a while. I’m also going to vaccuum out my car. Hopefully when I’m done, I will have no more bug problems!

Martina McBride in Concert

October 12th, 2008 at 3:10 pm by Jana

Last night, Martina McBride (she’s a country singer, in case you’ve never heard of her) performed in West Palm Beach and Jess and I went to her concert!! Jess bought the tickets (both my Christmas and my birthday gifts) and we got to sit in front of the front row! It was so amazing. The Warren Brothers and Jason Michael Carroll opened for her, and both performed really well, but nothing compared to Martina herself. I never realized she was so little! She has the biggest voice and can hold a note forever, but she is absolutely tiny. She received three standing ovations, and everyone could see how absolutely flattered she was by it. Jess and I both have a little bitty signed guitar pick. Here are some pictures, so you can see how close we were:

He moved around too much for me to get a really good picture!

 Thank you Jess!!!!

Extra Extra Protein

September 14th, 2008 at 9:09 pm by Jana

So I love peanut butter. It’s up there with chocolate on my list of favorite foods. Plus, it’s extra healthy for vegetarians because it’s so full of protein. I eat it with apples, bananas, on sandwiches, and even by itself. Tonight, I was having it with an apple–good stuff. So I’m cutting pieces off the apple, spreading some peanut butter on it, and just generally enjoying it. I glance to the side at the lid to the container and notice something moving…..

Things moving where there are not supposed to be things moving is never good. This was no different–there were ants crawling around on the lid. I, with eyes full of dread, turned to look into the jar of peanut butter that my spoon was sticking out of, and my fears were realized….there were ants in my peanut butter. I froze in disgust. Then I screamed.

It took a few screams, a temper tantrum full of juvenile jumping up and down, and the vicious murder of a few ants to calm me down. My peanut butter, of all things! Apparently, I will have to move all of my food to a very secluded area because it is not safe on top of my refridgerator.

Oh the Wonder of Saran Wrap

September 13th, 2008 at 7:46 pm by Jana

One of my roommates, Jess, broke two bones while she was at a concert this summer. She has a pink cast on her leg as a result. So today, I brought her to Wal-Mart to see if we could find a cast cover so she could take a shower without getting it wet. They didn’t seem to have one. So I suggested she could do one of two things: sit in the shower with her leg hanging out (she didn’t like that idea) or wrap it in saran wrap. So she bought two things of saran wrap, and we returned to the room so she could shower. She wrapped her leg in it and this is what it looked like:

The Switcheroo

September 9th, 2008 at 11:23 am by Jana

So today was the second day of classes. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have Scientific Literacy, Creative Writing Poetry, and Brit Lit. Scientific Literacy and Creative Writing are both in the morning at 9:30 and 11:00 respectively…..or so I thought….

I went to Scientific Literacy at 9:30 this morning, sat through the entire class and wondered why the syllabus said DSL 100 G and E when I thought I was supposed to be in J. But I disregarded the inconsistency. Then, I went to my Creative Writing class, but when I walked in, there was no one I recognized. The number of English majors is pretty small, so I at least recognize most of them. I walked back out. I called my friend Brittany and she was near my schedule. She told me my Creative Writing class was at 9:30. I denied it, saying I had just sat through my Scientific Literacy class at 9:30. Then I realized what I had done….

I got the times for my classes mixed up. It was just coincidence that the class I happened to sit through was another science class. I did not feel very smart. You’d think by my junior year in college I would know what I was doing……but apparently not!

Liberal Arts Symposium

March 19th, 2008 at 8:52 am by Jana

The Liberal Arts Symposium was last week. I meant to write about it sooner, but other things just kept getting in the way. For those who don’t know, the symposium is a chance for students from the College of Arts and Sciences to share some of the work they’ve done throughout the year. My friend Maria was in it, reading a paper from a China/Taiwan trip she went on over the summer. Michael, a guy I know from Medieval/Renaissance class last semester, gave a comical presentation about his trip to Egypt over the Winter break. Three of my friends were doing a project from math class, but I missed their presentation because I left early. I heard later that it was pretty funny, as well. There were many more presentations: one from a sociology project that included many of the Haitian workers on campus, another from an international student on, I think, the secretary general, and a couple from the science department. I read a research paper that I wrote this semester on The Awakening. It’s an eight page paper, so pretty long. I knew I was going to be up there for a while, so I tried to read fast to get it over with more quickly. A couple of people picked up on it, which was kind of embarrassing, but really only natural. It’s a good night for the College of Arts and Sciences, a good chance for the students to show off their talents. Great job to everyone who had the opportunity to present!

Clumsiness and Solitude

March 5th, 2008 at 10:34 am by Jana

So when normal people are riding a bike, if they fall, they are likely to fall off the bike, right? Not me. I’m so awkward that I didn’t fall off the bike. I fell off of a curb while I was walking my bike across the street. I even scraped my knees. I felt very five-year-old last night. I’m kind of upset because I had just gotten rid of all of the bruises I had (there were very many). Then this happens.

Anyway, I was thinking last night while I was riding home about how much I love having the room to myself. Being alone is sometimes refreshing. I could even call it an escape. You learn a lot about yourself when you’re alone. You think more and talk less (though  in my case, it may be the other way around). Solitude is good for you; if you can’t stand yourself, how can you expect any body else to stand you?

Hangover

February 18th, 2008 at 11:34 am by Jana

I have a cupcake hangover (which means I had two cupcakes last night: they made me hyper and sleeping has obviously not dispelled the effects) so this is sort of going to be an ADD blog.

Right now, it just started raining so hard!! I wanted to play in it with Brittany, but it’s kind of early to be playing in the rain. It’s so sad because it’s such perfect rain for playing in.

See what I mean?

Kaileigh and I just saw a squirrel stuck in a trash can while we were coming back from breakfast. We heard this noise, like claws scratching metal (sorry I couldn’t make it more imaginitive than that), and we see the poor squirrel attempting to jump out of the trash can. We could have watched it for hours probably if it hadn’t rescued itself after about a minute. I was kind of tempted to help it escape by taking out the trash bag or something, but scared squirrel=dangerous squirrel.  I don’t care how small he is, he could still scratch scars down my face. And the poor thing, when it got out, it’s tail wasn’t as bushy as it should have been .Kind of greasy and gross.

Why do so many women not like milk? I noticed that this morning when I ate cereal. I haven’t liked it since I was about 7. Kaileigh doesn’t like it, Brittany H. doesn’t like it. My sister does, but she’s a weirdo anyway (just kidding I love her). I know lots of women who dislike it, but I can’t think of any men who don’t like milk (unless they were lactose intolerant or something). I know not all women dislike it, but a lot of them do. I told Kaileigh maybe it has something to do with our ability to produce it. It would be an interesting experiment. I wonder if it’s been done? I kind of had the urge to go around and ask the women in the cafeteria if they liked it, but that was a side effect of the hangover.

I wonder if I should stop eating so much junk food?

I become quite talkative when I’m hyper. And I talk fast, too. Just read this really fast in your mind and you might get a sense of what I’m like hyper. But really, I just have so much to say when I’m hyper. I’m sure it drives people crazy. At least you can stop reading whenever you want. My poor friends; they have to risk hurting my feelings by telling me to shut up. And it’ s nearly impossible to get me to do it, anyway. Okay, I think I’m just going to stop.

Superbowl Sunday

February 4th, 2008 at 10:17 am by Jana

Superbowl last night. Can I just say wow?

First of all: the cable on the entire campus went out. Is that not ironic? Just when half the people on campus need it, it’s no longer there. Everyone ended up watching the game in the Knight’s Court, which has one satellite tv, fortunately. There really weren’t enough seats. I sat on the floor and many people stood for the entire game. I honestly don’t think that was important to them, though. I could tell this game wa important when people were RUNNING across campus so they wouldn’t miss kick off. As Brittany and I were coming down the stairs (walking at a leisurely pace), some guy comes bolting down them, up a floor from us, and catches up because he’s trying to get to the Knight’s Court. As soon as Brittany and I made it to the bottom of the stairs, we stood aside and let him run. He thanked us, which was nice, but we just thought it was so hilarious. We really wished we had our cameras out at the time.

Second of all: the Patriots lost. Most of my friends (and not to mention my grandmother) are huge Patriots fans, so it was not a good night. I was going for the Patriots, too, but mostly because my grandmother was going for them. I’m not any sort of hardcore fan. I wasn’t upset that they lost, but I know people who were absolutely devastated about it. A lot of Pats fans in the Knight’s Court left the game early, my friends included, because they just couldn’t stand to see that last second of the Pats’ loss. I can only hope they push this to the backs of their minds for a while and forget about it, though that doesn’t seem likely.
