Attention Incoming Spring Students- It’s FAFSA Time!

by Travis | September 23, 2009

If you are a transfer student or a new student who was not able to start school this fall, you are still eligible for spring term financial aid!  To begin, you might qualify for our academic scholarships.  Feel free to use our Scholarship Calculator for an idea on how much you might qualify for.

As always though, your eligibilty is tied to your FAFSA.  So, if you will be joining us this spring, then please complete your FAFSA as soon as possible.  Remember, your receipt of any form of financial aid is conditional upon completion of your FAFSA, save of course for ineligible international students.

Shortly, we will begin sending award letters to accepted spring students.  If you are in need of scholarships, grants or loans to pay for college and would like to be aware of your eligibility, then please complete your FAFSA today!

Your Statement of Account

by Travis | July 28, 2009

As the start of fall ‘09 classes rapidly approaches and we strive to hold on to this last precious month of summer, you have all received several notifications of statement postings to your myLynn account.

In reviewing those statements with your parents, many of you may be wondering, “Why doesn’t this show my scholarships?  Where is my financial aid?!”

When you see financial aid on your award letter but not on your statement, yes, it can be alarming.  This sense of urgency should act as a trigger to take action, and that action is to submit your financial aid documents.  Until we receive your financial aid documents, we will not post your financial aid to your statement.

So please, take a moment to reference your award letter to ensure we have received all of your financial aid forms.  As soon as all of your forms are received, we will update your statement.   If you have questions, as always, you may email financialaid@lynn.edu.

Receiving Aid? FAFSA Required!

by Travis | June 24, 2009

As detailed in various communications sent to both new and returning students, the completion of the FAFSA is a condition for receipt of any state or institutional funds.  For any student who has received an award letter for the upcoming 2009-2010 academic year, this fact can be evidenced on your letter by the inclusion of the FAFSA as a required document.  This condition does not apply to our international scholarship recipients, as they are not eligible to complete the FAFSA.

If you have questions or concerns regarding this requirement, please contact your financial aid counselor:

Ben Breier at bbreier@lynn.edu if you are an evening or graduate student

John Chambers at jchambers@lynn.edu if you are an athlete or musician

Karen Reed at kreed@lynn.edu if you are a returning student with last name A-L

Evy Lucena at elucena@lynn.edu if you are a returning student with last name M-Z

Travis Williams at twilliams@lynn.edu if you are a new student

Missing Documents

by Travis | May 22, 2009

Hello, students!  By now, summer vacation is well  under way for you, whether you just graduated high school or finished your final exams at Lynn.  To that end, have fun and be safe!!!!!

But don’t- please do not- neglect completing your financial aid documents.  The last thing you or your parents want is to find out a week before classes begin that your financial aid does not cover your costs!  At that point, you and your parents and our financial aid office are forced to scramble for a solution- never a good thing.  Worse yet, that solution may have passed you by as federal and institutional funds slowly yet inexorably wane.  Avoid this fate.  Maximize your financial aid by completing your financial aid documents now!

To reinforce the importance of completing your financial aid documents, please check your email.  By now, you have all received an email notification from the Office of Student Administrative Services that first lists your missing financial aid documents and then provides the following instructions and information:

Documents listed above can be downloaded at www.lynn.edu/financialaid, click on “Forms” then “2009-2010″ link.  Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) can be accessed at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Effective for the 2009-2010 school year, all domestic students who receive institutional aid, state grants or the Federal PLUS loan must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Returning students who did not have to complete the FAFSA in previous years are required to complete the application for 2009-2010 in order to receive their aid. Financial Aid Award Letters will be sent out after the FAFSA is received and all other required documents.

If a loan entrance interview is listed above, you may complete this on-line.  Please go to www.lynn.edu/loans then click on Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling.  Confirmation that counseling was completed successfully will be sent electronically to the school.  Please print the confirmation page for your records.

Please fax the above list of missing documents to 561-237-7188 as soon as possible.

All loan promissory notes must be dropped off to our office directly or be mailed to:
Student Administrative Services
Lynn University
3601 N. Military Trail
Boca Raton, FL 33431

Additional documents may be required upon final approval of your financial aid package.  At this point, all financial aid documents are considered past due and any further delays may risk availability of aid. It is critical at this time that you respond to this letter immediately.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us by email at financial@lynn.edu or by phone at 561-237-7185.

FERPA

by Travis | March 2, 2009

At Lynn, we respect your privacy as a student. Fortunately for you, so does our federal government. There actually exists a little-known federal law called the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, or FERPA, that guarantees your right to privacy of your student financial records. You are protected by this law once you turn 18 years of age or are enrolled in a post-secondary institution such as Lynn University. Here in the Office of Student Administrative Services (SAS), we take this law very seriously. We will not release any personal financial information to anyone except yourself, not even you parents, without your consent.

How do we then know to whom you’ve given your consent, you ask? That’s where the FERPA Financial Release Form comes in. Simply complete it—making sure to list on the form anyone you would like to grant access to your financial records at Lynn—and turn it in to SAS. You may also fax it to 561-237-7188. Our representatives will then require anyone you listed on the FERPA form to answer personal identifier questions—your Social Security number, student ID number, date of birth, etc.—before we will provide them with your financial information.
