Financial Aid Scams

by Travis | October 9, 2009

In a recent press release, the U.S. Department of Education along with several other national financial aid organizations have released a series of pamphlets, flyers and posters entitled “Don’t get Hooked”.

The message here is simple: do not pay for financial aid services!  Many financial aid scams exist whether they offer scholarship money for a fee, assistance with completing the FAFSA or even general advice.  If you see that there is a price tag associated with a scholarship or financial aid assistance, steer clear.   Recognize these servicse for what they are- a scam.  Please always remember that you should never have to pay for financial aid.  The money you would spend on these scams would be much, much better spent on your real college expenses.

At Lynn, we are ready and able to answer any of your financial aid questions at absolutely no cost- and we’re good at it, too!  With over 72 years of combined financial aid experience, our financial aid counselors are extremely knowledgable, and we do our best to stay on top of this rapidly evolving field to provide you with the most accurate, up-to-date information.  Please do not hesitate to contact us with your questions- as always, free of charge!  Here is our contact information:

BF Update

by Travis | October 9, 2009

Your boy friend?  Your best friend?  Nope- your Bright Futures!  To follow-up with the notice sent to our Bright Futures recipients, there are a few major changes to this Florida state-funded scholarship that recipients need to be be aware of.  Those changes are:

  • Your Bright Futures is now awarded to you based on the number of credit hours you are taking.  For example, if you are receiving the Bright Futures Medallion scholarship that pays $95 per credit hour and you are taking 16 credits this fall, then you are receiving $1,520 through the Bright Futures program in the fall term.
  • You are now required to repay the cost of any course withdrawn or dropped.  Using the example above to illustrate, if you were awarded $1,520 in Bright Futures based on 16 registered credits, but withdrew from one three-credit class today, then you would owe Lynn University $285 ($95 x 3) because we are now required to send this money back to the Florida Bright Futures Program.
  • Lastly, the Florida Legislature now requires you to complete a minimum of 24 credit hours this 2009-2010 academic year in order to be eligible to receive your Bright Futures again next year.

Attention Incoming Spring Students- It’s FAFSA Time!

by Travis | September 23, 2009

If you are a transfer student or a new student who was not able to start school this fall, you are still eligible for spring term financial aid!  To begin, you might qualify for our academic scholarships.  Feel free to use our Scholarship Calculator for an idea on how much you might qualify for.

As always though, your eligibilty is tied to your FAFSA.  So, if you will be joining us this spring, then please complete your FAFSA as soon as possible.  Remember, your receipt of any form of financial aid is conditional upon completion of your FAFSA, save of course for ineligible international students.

Shortly, we will begin sending award letters to accepted spring students.  If you are in need of scholarships, grants or loans to pay for college and would like to be aware of your eligibility, then please complete your FAFSA today!
