South/Arkansas
Ok, so I am from Arkansas. And as far as I know, I am the only one at Lynn who lived only in Arkansas. Most people at Lynn are from New England or international students. So, I get a lot of crap for being from the south, but I love being from the south. While I am from the south, I am not part of the KKK, I don’t date relatives, I am literate, and I don’t eat food I find on the road.
But, I do love high school and college football. If I was offered a ticket to the BCS National Championship game or a ticket to the Super Bowl, I would take the ticket to the BCS National Championship in a heartbeat. I love the atmosphere and the tailgating. As a kid, anytime the Arkansas Razorbacks played in Little Rock, I was there. My dad and I would show up hours before the game and walk around and find people giving out food and we would get some, especially if it was BBQ. The greatest game I went to was in 2002 with my cousin Andrew. We were sitting on the 50 yard line. Arkansas was losing by 6 and Matt Jones threw a 31 yard pass to the endzone with about 20 seconds left against LSU. The winner went to the SEC Championship. Decori Birmingham jumped between 2 defenders and caught the pass. The crowd when nuts and it was amazing! About a minute before the people in front of us left and told the LSU fans next to us to enjoy Atlanta, where the SEC Championship is played, and left their program, so I picked it up and still have it to this day.
In high school, my first two years our football team was a joke. Then our team got ok my junior year, but my senior year our team was awsome. Most the students were at the games, so the atmosphere was awsome. Students were tailgating and having a good time. We made it to the state semi-finals where we lost to Springdale High School, which had 6 players who currently play Division I. Their QB was the National Gatorade Player of the Year. For the first time in about 15 years, we beat our archrivals. It took overtime to do it, but it was awsome.
There is a restaurant back home I always go to. Its called Green Mill Cafe. Its a little hole in the wall place that I’ve gone to eat for about 15 years and I’ve always had the same dish, Chili Mac and Mashed Potatoes with Brown Gravy. It is so good! There is another restaurant I like to go to called Chip’s BBQ. I used to get a Beef BBQ sandwich with fries and a salad, but recently I’ve been getting the BBQ Salad with Beef, Carrots, and BBQ Sauce. It may sound nasty, but it is so good.Â
So, in closing, I love the south. I love the football and the food.
Getting Hectic
Whew! It is getting hectic here. For the past couple of weeks I’ve been getting up for basketball at about 5:30-6:00 in the morning. The team starts individuals, a small version of practice with about four players, or conditions, then I go back to my room about 7:30. On Monday, Wensday, and Friday, I get to sleep for about an hour, but a lot of times its hard to go back to sleep since I’m already awake, then I’m in my Marketing class at 9:00. That class is so fun. I guess its also a little easier for me since I’ve grown up in a business so I was involved in marketing and talked to my Mom about marketing a lot. Then at 10:00, I’m in Spanish class which is very intresting. I’ve taken Spanish before so I get some of it. On Tuesday and Thursday I’m in Intro to Sports Management at 8:15, American History at 9:30 and Computer Applications at 11. Sports Management is a lot of fun. We talk about sports (obviously), but Professor Curtis makes it so fun when we do. American History is rather boring since we watch a video the whole time. Computer is easy since I took a computer class in high school.
After classes, I go eat lunch with my friends in the cafeteria. Some people complain that the food isn’t good, but I like it. I can always find something to eat. Basketball practice comes next. We practice from 12:30 until 3:30. We are actually about to start two a days where we condition in both the morning and afternoon. After practice I normally go to my room and just relax since thats about the only time I get to haha. Later I normally hang out with my friends, go eat dinner, and do my homework. I normally go to sleep about 11 or so, and then the day starts all over. It’s a long day but I love it.
Gene
Head Manager of the Basketball Team
Most of you are probably wondering what I do as the head manager of Lynn’s Men’s Basketball Team. Well, there is a lot that goes on. During practice, I will get involved in drills, wether this be taking a pad and hitting players while they are trying to score at the rim or passing the ball to them or rebounding, its hard work. Its not uncommon to see me break a sweat during practice. I have to be at morning individuals in pre-season, which we start between 6:15-6:30 in the morning. I also have to be at conditioning at 6:00 in the morning with water. This means I have to be at the gym by 5:30 to fill up the water bottles and go to the track at Pope John Paul High School or set up the gym on campus. Then we have practice from 12:30-3:30 in the afternoon. During the season I will travel with the team and keep stats during games, make sure the managers are doing what they are suppossed to do. Being the head manager is a lot of hard work and very time consuming. I am on call 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. I have 4 days for Christmas Break and I spend my Thanksgiving with the basketball team, but when the day is done I have done something not everyone can say they have done, and since I want to be a basketball coach, this is a great opportunity for me to stick my foot in the door. Our head manager last year, Pete Gash, recently took a job at LaSalle, a Division I school in Chicago, so that opens the door even more for me. Until next time, be safe, be smart, but have fun.
What is SGA?
HEY Y’ALL!!! I am at an SGA board meeting and hope that y’all will join SGA this year if you’re a student now, or next year if you are gonna come next year. Its a great way to get involved and meet people. There are so many organizations, including a sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma; three fraternities, Zeta Beta Tau, Alpha Phi Delta, and Lamda Sigma Upsilon; KAT, which brings many activities to campus, such as Hinder; RHA, which is an organization to help make dorm life better. SGA is in the process of trying to become a better organization and promote campus life!
