A quote to live by

by Gene | August 13, 2008

I love thinking up quotes or just finding quotes. I think they are a great motivational tool and can help put life into perspective.

This quote that I have for you is one that I was think about the other day. I was thinking about where I plan to go in life and it fit perfectly.

“You can’t judge a book by its cover, because then you won’t know how the story goes.”

I feel this is a true thing, because I know I’m not the best looking guy, but I do know that I plan on being a successful basketball coach and businessman. The businessman part of it is pretty much set up as my parents have a store that has been in business for 60 years and a sister company to it that has been in business for 20 years. I plan on taking it over after my coaching career.

The coaching side of it is going to be a little difficult, but with the connections I’ve made as well as the work ethic that my parents have instilled in me, it will make it a little easier to get started and be successful. I want to win national championships and have the honor and privilage to be mentioned in the same breath as coaches such as John Wooden and Adolph Rupp. I know this will take a tremendous amount of work and time, I am willing to put in that kind of time and work. I know there are thousands of other coaches and people who wanna be coaches who say this, so I know this is going to be a tremendously steep hill to climb.

I’ll have another one for you later.

March Madness

by Gene | March 7, 2008

This weekend will determine if we continue our season, or if we get ready for next year. I got a text message at the beginning of the week from last year’s head manager that wrapped up what this time of year is all about “It’s a one game season.” This is what “March Madness” is all about; just one game season followed my more or none depending on how you do. If you win, you get another season; if you lose, you go home and get ready for next season. We won our first season by beating Florida Tech in double overtime, led by Chris Hall’s historic performance of 42 points. This weekend we get a second, against Florida Southern in the Semi-finals of the conference tournament. We are going in with the attitude that we will get a third, and then another in the NCAA Tournament. We packed with that attitude too. If you go in with any other attitude, your season will be over.

This can be translated into any other field as well, not just sports. In business, if you don’t think you can sell something, you won’t. In relationships, if you don’t think it will last, it won’t. Things don’t just happen, you have to make them happen, and you attitude has a lot to do with it.

I was reading the most recent issue of Sports Illustrated and was reading an article about University of North Carolina’s Tyler Hansbrough. Last year in their last regular season game against their archrival Duke University, he was on the receiving end of a very physical flagrant foul and had his nose broken. 30 minutes later he wanted his picture taken, with cotton swabs in his nose and his jersey all bloody so people would know how physical the game is. His coach, Roy Williams, said that Tyler is not the most talented or athletic player that he has ever coached, but he is one of the best because of he plays every second like it will be his last. This is one reason why North Carolina will go very deep into the NCAA Tournament. He said that his reasoning for playing like he does was watching his brother Greg’s resilience and learning to walk all over again, after having a tumor removed.

John Wooden Quotes

by Gene | February 4, 2008

I count John Wooden as one of my favorite coaches of all time. He is considered one of the greatest basketball coachers of all time. These are some quotes from him.

“Success is peace of mind which is direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best of which you are capable.”

“Before you can lead others, you must be able to lead yourself.”

“Discipline yourself and others won’t need to”

“Self-Control in little things leads to control of bigger things.”

“The choices you make in your personal life affect your professional life.”

“I want a hustling, fighting team that never has time to crab or complain to anyone about anything.”

“Don’t live in fear of making a mistake.”

“Failure to act is often the biggest failure of all.”

“Ability may get you to the top, but character will keep you there.”

“Failure to prepare is preparing to fail.”

“The true test of a man’s character is what he does when no one is watching.”

“A player who makes a team great is more valuable than a great player. Losing yourself in the group, for the good of the group, that’s teamwork.”

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is what others think you are.”

On Your Way Up

by Gene | October 24, 2007

I took some of my clothes to the dry cleaners yesterday and when I got my receipt, I looked at the bottom of it there was a quote that I saw I thought was great. “Be nice to the people you meet on the way up, because you meet them on your way down.”

I think that this is a very true quote. In most professions, its not what you know, its who you know. If you are nice to people when you are rising to the top, if/when you start falling, they will help you try to get back on your feet.

There are three people who since I have met has been nothing but nice to me. One is our head basketball coach, Coach Scott McMillin, the second is Assistant Coach Tim Heskett, and the third is the other Assistant Coach Marcus Hayes. These coaches are ones that I would do anything for because even though I’m only a sophomore this year and they were all Division I basketball players, they are very nice people and don’t feel they are better than anybody else. I have even seen Coach McMillin doing the laundry and dry mopping the floor. In major college basketball, that is very rare.

So in closing, be nice to the people you meet on the way up, because you meet them on the way down.
