What a week

by Gene | February 17, 2008

This week was awesome! Tuesday was the Sigma Sigma Sigma and Alpha Phi Delta’s Annual Crush Party, so of course we the brothers of Zeta Beta Tau were gonna do something for it. One of our brothers is Big Lu, aka Chris Dillon, and one of our brothers, Rob, can make balloon animals, so we took what they do best, and sent Chris in dressed as Cupid, and he as well as a couple of us handed out balloon roses to the Sigma’s. The only bad part of the night was the fact that there was a tornado warning. People were freaking out, but being from the middle of the country it’s a common occurrence, so I was very calm. The next day was our first game of the week, against our main rival Barry University. Earlier in the year, we beat them by 3 in overtime. This time was very different. In the first eight minutes, we jumped to a 21-4 lead. We took a 37-17 lead into halftime. The closest Barry came was a 14 point lead with 9 minutes to play. The final score was 67-45 for our first sweep of the season. Ed Millard was the games high scorer with 19 points, Randy Jones added 14, Chris Hall added 13, and Hans Schur added 11. Luke Postorino recorded 9 assists. As a team, we shot over 50% from the field. On Friday, I helped my friend Kristin hand out magazines at the Florida Panthers game. For helping, her boss got us free tickets and $10 each in Panther Bucks, which got us food and drinks. After the game her boss told us that anytime we needed tickets, he would try his best, since they couldn’t pay us for it, which we didn’t expect in the first place. On Saturday, we played our second game of the week, against Rollins. The first time we played, we won 77-68 after overcoming an 11 point halftime deficit. This game was very similar. At halftime, we were facing just an 8 point deficit. We started the game down 18-8 seven minutes in, before Rollins extended their lead to 17, when last year’s Conference Player of the Year, Jonny Reibel scored to make it 35-18. Going into halftime, Reibel hit a shot off the glass after we made a run, to make the score 39-31 at half. Coming out of the half, Rollins kept their lead, before Randy hit one of his six threes of the game to cut the lead to four, then moments later hit another one to cut the lead to one. Moments later, Chris Hall hit a three to give us our first lead since the very beginning of the game. After that three, we never looked back, going up by as many as 7. The final score was 69-66, making it our second sweep of the year and our first over Rollins since the 2004-2005 season. Randy provided a huge spark off the bench, leading all scorers with 22. Ed was a near perfect 7-8 for 17 points.

Have a good week and be safe.

This Week

by Gene | February 12, 2008

This week we a chance to sweep two opponents, who swept us last year. Our first opponent is our main rival in Barry University. Barry is currently 6-17 overall and 0-11 in conference. Our last game against Barry into overtime and was sealed with a Chris Hall steal. I feel our team has taken many steps forward since that game and has proved that they can handle this test and get their first sweep.

Our second opponent is Rollins College. When we beat them earlier in the year, they were ranked number 4 in the nation, and have since lost 2 more conference games. Rollins averages 82 points a game, while being ranked second in the conference in field goal percentage, first in three point percentage, 1st in field goal percentage and three point percentage defense, and first in assist to turnover ratio. I feel this will be a true test of how our team is improving.

I’m excited for this week and hope that there is a good crowd to support the guys for all their hard work, because I feel they deserve it. Have a good week and be safe.

Bob Knight

by Gene | February 7, 2008

The other night, I was browsing the internet and came across a headline that shocked me: “Bobby Knight Resigns from Texas Tech.” Bobby Knight is the all-time leader of wins in Men’s Division I basketball history. He started his coaching career at Army. Next, he moved to coach at the University of Indiana, and then finally Texas Tech. Bobby Knight is considered a controversial coach for many of his antics.

In 1985, Knight threw a chair across the floor in protest of a referee’s call during a game against Purdue.

On November 13, 2006, Knight was shown allegedly hitting player Michael Prince under the chin to get him to make eye contact. Prince, his parents, and Texas Tech all backed up Bobby Knight saying it was not a big deal and he wasn’t doing it to hurt Prince. In October of last year, a man in Lubbock, Texas accused Knight of firing a shotgun in his direction, after he yelled at Knight and another man for hunting too close to his home. Knight denied the allegation. While Knight has had some actions that can be questioned, he has done many great things in his career. No team of his has been sanctioned by the NCAA for recruiting violations, and he has graduated a high percentage of his players. He also is the all time leader in victories among men’s basketball coaches in Division I, with 902. He is also the only coach to win an NIT title, NCAA title, Olympic Gold, and Pan American Gold.Bobby Knight is an amazing coach who has helped his players, coaches, and managers go on to receive head coaching jobs. This includes Mike Krzyzewski (Player) at Duke, Lawrence Frank (Manager) with the New Jersey Nets, and Mike Davis (Assistant Coach) at Indiana and currently University of Alabama-Birmingham.

Bob Knight will always be “The General” and be well respected.

My Break and New Years

by Gene | January 1, 2008

Well my break was far different from the normal Lynn students break. The first day break started, we traveled to West Palm Beach to play Palm Beach Atlantic. That was our first road win of the season. After that we played North Alabama, which we lost in a close one, at the deHornle Center. On the 20th, we started the Pepsi/DoubleTree Classic. Barry University, the University of New Haven, and Missouri-Rolla participated. The first game we played New Haven. The first half of the game, we played great defensively. The 2nd half we played well enough to preserve the win. The 2nd game we played Missouri-Rolla. We played decently on the defensive side of the ball and great offensively. We were very happy to go home for four days on a winning streak.

We got back on the 26th, and went right to work trying to get better and prepare for our next opponent, SW Minnisota State, who has finished 2nd in their conference, behind Winnona State, who won the National Championship two years ago, and was runner-up last year after losing on a last second lay-up.  We played a good game on the 29th against them. Lynn led most of the game, with SW Minnisota leading at half by 4. We came out of halftime firing on all cyclinders. The game became tied at 64 with 46 seconds left. Lead changes and ties ensued for the rest of the half. Regulation ended in contraversy, as Randy Jones drove baseline and passed to Ed Millard waiting in the middle of the lane. As Ed was going up for a game winning dunk, he was fouled hard, but the referee made no call. He explained to our coaches that he wanted the players to decide the game, not his whistle. In overtime, we showed our excellent conditioning by outscoring SW Minnisota by 7. Ed and Hans Schur alone outscored SW Minnisota 12-11. Ed scored a career-high 31 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds. Hans scored 16 and pulled down 11 boards.

New Year’s Eve was a fun evening. Hans invited everybody over to his apartment, where his family was in town and the cooked us steaks and sausage. They were really good, and his family was extremely generous in doing this for us and being so nice. We all watched the ball drop with his family and enjoyed a great time together. Now, we go to work improving ourselves and getting prepared to play Florida Southern in Lakeland.

Have a great New Year!!

LU vs. Florida/Bethune-Cookman

by Gene | November 7, 2007

This past weekend, the men’s basketball team played two games. The first game was on November 3th in Daytona Beach against the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman. The beginning of the game say the Knights come out a little flat, but they turned it around in the second half and won by 4 points. Ed Millard had an amazing game scoring 35 points.

The second game was on November 5th in Gainseville against the Florida Gators. Coming out of the gates the Knights were confident and took a small lead but then the Gators came back and started to take control. The atmposhere was great. The fans were loud and constantly in the game. If our fans could come just close to this, the DeHornle Gym will be rocking and the opponent won’t know what to do.

The basketball knows what they have to do to turn it around and I believe we will and have a great season and be special. I hope that a lot of fans come to our games to witness just how special we will be.

Until next time, have a great day and GO KNIGHTS!!

Professors

by Gene | October 23, 2007

So we all know that professors say some interesting things. Well, I have two this semester who say stuff that make me laugh all the time. One is Professor Curtis. He was talking about the slogan “Be Like Mike” and he turned to me and says “Let’s change it to ‘Be Like Gene.’” Its a great idea, becuase of course everybody wants to be like me, well except for most people. Haha! Professor Curtis is a teacher who never loses your attention. He keeps class so interesting, even though the class is at 8 in the morning. The other professor is Professor Zudeck, or Mr. Zoo. He says that he is believes in hair transplant and is even a donor.” This is because he doesn’t have a lot of hair. He will also repeatedly ask if anybody wants to drop the class after he explains an assignment.

Professor like these are the greatest becuase they always keep your attention and they make you want to show up to class becuase you want to hear what they have to say.

Head Manager of the Basketball Team

by Gene | September 25, 2007

Most of you are probably wondering what I do as the head manager of Lynn’s Men’s Basketball Team. Well, there is a lot that goes on. During practice, I will get involved in drills, wether this be taking a pad and hitting players while they are trying to score at the rim or passing the ball to them or rebounding, its hard work. Its not uncommon to see me break a sweat during practice. I have to be at morning individuals in pre-season, which we start between 6:15-6:30 in the morning. I also have to be at conditioning at 6:00 in the morning with water. This means I have to be at the gym by 5:30 to fill up the water bottles and go to the track at Pope John Paul High School or set up the gym on campus. Then we have practice from 12:30-3:30 in the afternoon. During the season I will travel with the team and keep stats during games, make sure the managers are doing what they are suppossed to do. Being the head manager is a lot of hard work and very time consuming. I am on call 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. I have 4 days for Christmas Break and I spend my Thanksgiving with the basketball team, but when the day is done I have done something not everyone can say they have done, and since I want to be a basketball coach, this is a great opportunity for me to stick my foot in the door. Our head manager last year, Pete Gash, recently took a job at LaSalle, a Division I school in Chicago, so that opens the door even more for me. Until next time, be safe, be smart, but have fun.
