From this Day Forward … No Trays!

by Debbie | April 22, 2008

What’s Up With …

No trays? If you ate lunch in the caf today, you probably noticed something missing. The trays are gone. And it’s no accident. I had heard that SGA was trying to get them removed because trays promote waste and are bad for the environment, what with all the water and chemicals to clean them (and we use 2,500 of them). But I didn’t realize it would be today. Of course, it makes sense, since today is Earth Day. But I didn’t know that until I stopped Taryn (SGA VP) in the tray return area and my inquiring mind wanted to know. Was this just for today? Or is this for good?

And so, I found out that from this day forward there will be no trays. So, get used to the balancing act and the exercise walking back and forth to get your sides and drinks, etc. Actually, it was kind of amusing to watch the befuddled faces and furrowed brows trying to figure out how to get food from the serving lines to the table. Everyone managed, though. Guess it will just take some getting used to.

I never even thought of the chemical waste that the trays must have created. I had thought they were referring to the waste of food, as one is more likely to dish up more when one can simply carry several plates on a tray. However, Lynn is making great strides in becoming a greener, more environmentally friendly university.
