Snow Day Without Snow
It has been over a month that I have been planning Snow Day. From the booths, advertisement, club involvement, the snow, coffee, and music, it would seem that the event was going to be a success.
I had no plans today. My complete focus was going to be on Snow Day. After having lunch with Mark, sloppy joes and mac & cheese, I was informed that Snow Day shirts had to come to a halt. A member of KAT was really enthusiastic to make shirts for Snow Day to raise money for Relay for Life. Unfortunately, during the revision and approval of the proof a typo wasn’t found. The front of the T-Shirt read, “Lynn Get’s Snowed In!” There is no apostrophe needed in the “Get”. The individual who created the shirt was disappointed when I informed them that we had to stop sales. I tried to explain that everyone makes mistake and we learn from them, but it was still a disappointment.
I began setting up at 2pm, three hours prior to the event. I wanted everything to be perfect. The Sun Sentinel would be there and the planning that went into this event was very extensive. There were over twelve KAT members that came out to help out. We began moving tables, hanging up lights, plugging in extension cords, and inflating the holiday balloon characters. Everything was looking great.
Other organizations began to show up and set their tables for the event. Five o’clock came and the snow still was not here. Mark tried calling the company, but there was no response. It was near 5:30pm and the snow was still not here. I was so nervous and disappointed. Everything was great, but snow day had no snow.
It was 5:35 and the truck entered the south lot. I was still upset, but relieved that they were at least here. I informed the snowmen where to put the piles. At 6:00pm there was no snow. I was very upset. The starter ( the part of the truck to shoot out the snow) was not working. Matt Chaloux even came over to see if he could jump start it. Unfortunately there was no success.
It was a snow day without snow. Everything else was great, but inside of me I was trembling. I feel really passionate about everything I do and plan. Even though Mark and I did everything possible, it still did not feel right. I felt as though I had let the students down. Fifteen tons of snow, and we didn’t even get one snow ball. If people have never witnessed me upset or distraught today was the day. I love student activities and planning for KAT, and this just wasn’t a true example of my work or the KAT members.
