The Only Undergraduate, San Diego for the summer!

Over Winter Break I was informed about an opportunity to participate in an internship during the summer. When I found out about it, the deadline had already past. I called the ACUHO (Association of College and University Housing Officers) office, the organization sponsoring the internship, for a possible extension because I had just found out about it. They were very understanding and gave me an opportunity to complete my resume, cover letter, and references within 48 hours. I frantically had put everything together and submitted it.

When I browsed the ACUHO-I internship database I saw three opportunities that interested me. My ideal primary focus were conferences. The three opportunities were University of San Diego, Colombia University, and Brown University. Many other universities contacted me and encouraged me to apply for their internship, but there were several factors that I considered including: location, pay, room/board, and potential learning experience that could develop. University of San Diego was the first university that contacted me. After filling out additional questions, two phone interviews, and USD contacting my references, results would be given to me by 12:00PM today… Anxiety, eagerness, excitement, and nervousness all went through my head.

I sat on my bed and 11:59AM my phone was ringing….”Congratulations, we are offering you an internship opportunity for this upcoming summer at University of San Diego.” With no hesitation my answer was YES! I have never been to California in my life and cannot wait to go. This position is usually filled by graduate level students and I am the first undergraduate to take on this responsibility. I couldn’t ask for a better location and experience.
