Tapping a Keg
The name of this blog entry may spark some interest by itself, but it clearly defines the issues that happened tonight at the Relay For Life Kick Off. We wanted to have something new and different at our kick off. With so many events occurring on campus a lot of the refreshments get repeated. Ice cream socials, pizza, and cookies are often always repeated. It was time for something unique. It was crucial that we attract students, faculty, and staff to this event. Since it was after business hours our many target was students. We had come up with a great idea: “A Rootbeer Keg”.
I searched online, local directories, and even contacted local breweries to see where we could get one. No luck! Finally I contacted Famous Faces. Whenever we are in need of crazy, spontaneous things, they can find it and they sure did. The Rootbeer Keg was delivered this morning and put in the walk in fridge. I hadn’t seen a keg since I was a bar back during high school. It was HEAVY!
Armando, my mom, and I brought the keg out into Perper Plaza. I had tapped kegs before while working as a bar back, so I thought it would be no problem. Working in a restaurant the keg was always connected to Nitrogen and Co2 regulator so all you had to do was clamp down the handle. This was not the case. As I positioned the handle on the keg and gentle pressed down, you would have thought it was New Years and the champagne was just popped. Rootbeer shot out like a raining fountain. I was covered in rootbeer and anyone within a five foot radius was too. Attempt #2 was no different, it was raining soda everywhere. I looked up for assistance from anyone, but apparently no one in the crowd knew how to tap a keg, thats a good thing I guess. Finally after several attempts Scott Plumb was able to help me and we worked together to get it working.
Covered in rootbeer, sticky from head to top, and dripping soda everywhere I ran back to the residence halls to put on my Hope shirt and rushed back just in time for the photo.

hahahahahaha i can see you doing, jumping, and freezing as it rains soda hahaha i wish i had been there
