On campus this week is Josten’s Yearbook. They host a conference for high school students who are creating and designing their high school year book. Bryana was stuck with running the theater sound and lighting so Jeanie and I joined her up in the sound booth. Josten’s was hosting a talent show.

A male student introduced himself on stage and then the lights went black. Next thing you know he is on the stage in a dress singing Leona Lewis: Bleeding Love. Absolutely hilarious! The crowd was going wild. Now the act is called Yearbook Rejects, one girl proclaims, “We are Yearbook Rejects because we are on newspapers.” High school has been so long ago, I barely remember what went on.

Of course we have this high school student that is in charge because she is the daughter of the director. She is trying to tell us how things happen with the lights and sound when she is completely clueless. The days of young leadership… she’ll make her mark someday.

Everything has been going really well….last night there was a cocktail reception in the Science and Tech building. It was really neat. The building is only three years old and the lobby has fiber-optic magnetic string lights that hang from the ceiling center to create a chandelier effect. Around the lobby of the room are magnetic panels that if you touch them, they change the color of the fiber-optics.

The catered events here are very unique and different. Tonight there was a Mashed Potato Martini Bar. What are your thoughts about this one? No, it isn’t adding alcohol to mashed potatoes. It is simply two ice cream scoops of mashed potatoes served in a goblet wine class and then there is bacon, cheese, chives, sour cream, and other fixins that are in huge martini glasses for you to add to your potatoes. Simply delicious…

The largest conference of the summer is in-house. A huge checkin on Saturday of 384 followed by more on Sunday. As we checked in guests one after another the line continued to flow. National Ironworkers had their own check in and then they would flow into our room for housing. They were being housed all over campus including Maher, Alcala Vista Apartments, San Buenaventura, and even Manchester. I have been in charge of CWI, Certified Welding Instructors, since their arrival. National Ironworkers have come to the University of San Diego for the past 22 years. Students come from all different Locals around the country to learn new skills to bring back to their local unions. We had to set classrooms, catering events, the “PIT” (where actual welding occurs and the annual PIT party), and much more…

As check-in started to get really busy Jonnie and Michelle realized that the excel file that was sent to us for housing was incorrect. Michelle, the conference contact, had completed the housing chart in a different version of excel than ours. For the regular participants this wasn’t an issue, but all the spouses were lined up with different partners than they were supposed to be with. This glitch in the spreadsheet had us re-arranging housing assignments for the rest of the afternoon. Pretty crazy and intense…but you have to do what makes the customer happy.

This morning it was my opportunity to run the Wednesday morning meeting. If you have ever worked in events or with conferences before then you would be familiar with these meetings. This meeting is the time for us to go through the next two weeks of conferences and discuss all of those conferences that are currently in house. All areas on campus are at this meeting to find out all updates on resident counts, commuter counts, meal plans, facilities, etc.

Of course the morning that I am running the meeting I sleep in….my alarm never went off. I just happened to open my eyes and look at my phone to see 8AM…umm that was the time I was supposed to be clocked in at. I franticly rushed around the room to get dressed and get down to the meeting as soon as possible. I had to clock in at crossroads and then the meeting was at the IPJ building across campus…I got clocked in at 8:17am and luckily Bryana and Jonnie hadn’t left yet and Jonnie had a car.

We were supposed to be there at 8:30am, and at 8:29am Eileen calls my cell phone…”Where are you? Kathi is wondering about your whereabouts.” I am never late for anything…except occasional classes, but this…

We walked in, the room stared…I think that is enough explanation.
